Hello 2013!!

Awareness is defined by what we think, feel and do.  I want to encourage you to make this a year of developing your heart and becoming fulfilled on the inside.

Character is what develops our hearts. Make this a priority in your daily life. Spend time to find a new, better way to grow. This movement gives deeply.

In place of the typical resolutions, you’ll want to pick a few character traits as your New Year Intention.  Write down practical ways to put them into action. Re-visit this in six months and share stories of times you successfully chose differently. Celebrate!

CHARACTER TRAITS

Accessibility – make myself approachable and easy to talk to
Awareness – being aware of what is taking place internally and externally so I can have the right responses
Benevolence – giving to others without expecting personal reward
Boldness – show the ability to take risks, be confident and courageous
Compassion – investing whatever is necessary to heal the hurts of others
Contentment – realizing that true happiness is not found on the outside
Courageous – living without fear of the outcome
Creativity – approaching an idea from a new perspective
Discernment – understanding the deeper reasons why things happen
Discretion – recognizing and avoiding words, actions & attitudes that could bring undesirable consequences
Faith – confidence that good character actions will yield the best outcome
Freedom – give yourself the freedom to be you
Flexibility – willingness to change plans or ideas according to the direction of my intuition
Forgiveness – letting go of those who have wronged me and not hold resentment
Generosity – sharing my energy so I can freely give to those in need
Gentleness – showing consideration and personal concern for others
Gratefulness – letting others know by my words and actions how they have benefited my life
Humility – be modest of my own importance or be humble
Intuition – trust my gut as this is my inner being speaking
Joyfulness – maintaining a good attitude, even when faced with unpleasant conditions
Patience – the capacity to accept, tolerate delay or suffering without reacting
Security – structuring my life around that which cannot be destroyed or taken away
Self-Control – rejecting wrong desires and doing what is right
Sensitivity – perceiving the true attitudes and emotions of those around me
Sincerity – proceeding from genuine feelings
Tolerance – practice of recognizing and respecting the beliefs or practices of others
Truthfulness – honesty in your thoughts, actions and words
Virtue – the moral excellence evident in my life as I consistently do what is right
Wisdom – seeing & responding to situations from a perspective that transcends my current circumstances

Awareness is in your heart. I want to encourage you to grow that part of yourself in this new year. Happy New Year All!!

Angela Zawada, owner of Moksha Yoga Edmonton, demonstrates the correct posture for the Prayer Twist pose to prevent injuries.

Benefits

This pose is fantastic for warming up the legs and loosening up the muscles that connect the vertebrae. Twisting plays a huge part in the process of detoxification as well.

How

  1. On an exhale, sit down and bring outside of the right tricep onto the outside of the left thigh.
  2. Back is flat as you initially set up, with the hips in line with the legs.
  3. Push the tricep into the thigh and twist the spine outwards and lengthen.
  4. Weight is back in the heels.
  5. Initiate the twist from a soft stomach in order to twist through the lower spine as well as middle and upper spine.
  6. Upper elbow points upwards with palms pressing together.
  7. Inhale lengthen, exhale twist.
  8. Squeeze inner thighs slightly.
  9. Stack upper shoulder above the lower shoulder, opening the chest to the side.

Here Angela demonstrates the incorrect posture for the Prayer Twist pose that can cause injuries.

Day 9 out of 30 and I'm still loving it! When I started this challenge, I was worried I would drive myself nuts trying to cram too much into one day, but I've been pretty good about leaving work at a decent hour and making time for myself to relax a little at home, either before or after class. The week to come is sure to offer up it's own challenges, however, as I have a birthday dinner, a parent-teacher meeting and a wedding cake to make.

Thanks for coming to class and congrats on doing such a great job with your challenge! Xo, Edith.
